Biography

As an adjunct professor in the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at Butler County Community College since 2004, Dr. Dale Lumley has taught College Composition, College Research Writing, and Technical Writing as both live and online courses. Lumley is currently the superintendent for the Butler Area School District with just under 7,000 students in Butler County. He previously worked as the Superintendent of the South Butler School District in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania and as the Assistant Superintendent of the Gateway School District in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. In addition, he has worked as a high school English teacher, assistant principal, and high school principal.


Lumley earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Slippery Rock University. While earning a Master of Arts in English from Middlebury College in Vermont, he studied at the prestigious Bread Loaf School of English and at Oxford University in England. Lumley received a doctorate in Administration and Leadership Studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His dissertation regarding the influence of large-scale writing assessments on classroom instruction earned him the Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has published articles in English Journal and in the book, Reclaiming the Classroom: Teacher Research as an Agency for Change.
