Build Habits That Help You Thrive

Student Success Coaching is like your personal coaching team—here to help you tackle college with strategies, not stress. Coaching is personalized support that complements (but is different from) academic advising and counseling.

Success coaching introduces you to resources, helps you build habits, and guides you in creating a strong foundation for success in college and beyond. Much like fitness training, success coaching is interactive—you’ll work with a coach to identify your strengths, overcome challenges, and set a path toward your goals.

What Coaching Helps With

Our Student Success Coaches can help you:

  • Get started and stay on track with tasks
  • Manage time and stay organized
  • Improve study strategies and pacing
  • Build self-awareness and responsibility
  • Set meaningful goals and plan ahead
  • Strengthen focus and motivation
  • Advocate for yourself when challenges arise
  • Balance in-person, online, or remote coursework

Time Management Strategies

In the end, you will manage your time—or it will manage you. Here are a few strategies coaches can guide you through:

  • Estimate study time: For every one hour in class each week, plan on two hours of study outside class. (Example: A 15-credit semester = 30 hours of study per week.)
  • Weekly reading & notes: Read before class, take notes, highlight key points, and jot down questions.
  • Review regularly: Go over your class notes each week and fill in missing details.
  • Start early: Begin papers and projects ahead of time to reduce stress and improve results.
  • Plan weekly study: Short, steady sessions beat last-minute cramming every time.

Making Your Schedule

Creating a balanced schedule is a powerful step toward success. Coaches can help you:

  • Choose a planner or electronic calendar that works for you.
  • Record set commitments like classes, work, or childcare.
  • Block out two study hours per week for each credit you’re taking.
  • Add in commuting, meals, sleep, and other essentials.
  • Protect time for activities that recharge you—friends, family, exercise, or relaxation.

Pro tip: Break study time into 2-hour blocks for better focus.

Course Outlines Matter

Every instructor provides a course outline (syllabus). Use it to:

  • Track readings, assignments, and exam dates
  • Understand learning goals and grading
  • Note how to contact your instructor
  • Stay aware of major deadlines

Put all key dates from your course outlines into one calendar—so you’re not surprised when multiple assignments pile up in one week.

Asking for Help

Asking for help isn’t weakness—it’s strength. Research shows that help-seeking behaviors are linked to higher success. You’ve already paid for BC3’s resources, so take advantage of them!
