2025 Distinguished Alumni Honorees
Described by friend and high school classmate, Thomas E. Menchyk, as ‘a man of character
who reflects the values of BC3’, Rick Barger graduated with an associate degree in
business administration from BC3 in 1969 and retired as a certified public accountant
and former partner in the Harrisburg office of Ernst & Young, after working at the
firm for 30 years. Barger, who was the first member of his family to attend college,
went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University in 1971 and completed
the Northwestern University Kellogg School of Business’s executive program in 1989
in Chicago. He has volunteered with or served on boards for numerous central Pennsylvania
professional and nonprofit organizations since 1971. Among his awards are those from
Penn State University - and the Central Pennsylvania Business Journal with his 2011
selection for a lifetime achievement award. After his retirement from Ernst & Young,
Barger served in various executive capacities with Diakon, a Topton-based nonprofit
organization that provides social services for children and families. Barger and his
wife, Patricia (Miller) Barger, established a scholarship with the BC3 Education Foundation
in 2014 in memory of their parents - the Barger-Miller Family Scholarship. Rick and
Patricia have been married over 55 years, had seven children and 20 grandchildren.
Tom McConnell graduated from BC3 in 1980 with an associate degree in general studies.
He led NCAA basketball programs at St. Francis University, Loretto, and at Indiana
University of Pennsylvania in 15 seasons as a head coach. In his nomination of Tom,
Butler resident John Reddick stated, He “fits the bill and stands shoulder to shoulder
with each of the alumni who began their academic and professional journeys at BC3
and are now respected citizens and leaders in their communities,” McConnell later
earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from what was Point Park College in 1984.
He was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference -West coach of the year, a
record three times at IUP and was an assistant coach of the USA women under -16 national
team in 2021 and of the under-17 squad in 2022. Tom has founded and directed numerous
basketball and ministry camps since 1981. After his retirement as IUP’s coach in 2022,
he became director of evangelization at All Saints Parish in Butler. Mr. McConnell
will also become the sixth member of the BC3's Charles W. Dunaway Pioneer Hall of
Fame to also be selected as a distinguished alumnus. Tom & his wife, Lisa, have six
children and ten grandchildren.2024 Distinguished Alumni Honorees
A true advocate and champion for BC3, Bill Miller completed his associate degree
in general studies from BC3 in 1978. He continued to La Roche College to obtain a
bachelor’s degree in History in 1980 and later completed his master’s degree in Student
Personnel from Slippery Rock University in 1994. He began his professional journey
with Butler County Community College in 1980 as the Director of Intramural Athletics
and continued his lifetime of service to BC3 in various roles including part-time
instructor, Interim Dean of Students, Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, Men’s Golf
Coach, Director of Admissions and Dean for Humanities & Social Sciences until 2017.
Upon his retirement, he also answered the call to serve as Interim Vice President
& Provost during 2022. Bill has remained engaged with BC3 by continuing to serve as
coach of the BC3 Men’s Golf Team, leading the Pioneers to several championships with
several All-Americans.
In 2021, Bill was named Western PA Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year and he was inducted into the BC3 Chuck Dunaway Pioneer Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023. He previously served on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters, as Basketball Coach for 7th and 8th Graders at Holy Sepulcher, a member of the Slippery Rock High School Guidance Advisory Group and currently serves on the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame Board. He is married to wife, Cyndi, and is the proud father of four grown children: Erica, Corey, Kate and Austin. Bill is the epitome of a committed, team player who bleeds Pioneer blue and white.
Jeff Geibel, a financial advisor with Edward Jones in Butler, graduated in 2004 with
an associate of science degree in Business Administration from BC3. He continued his
education at Slippery Rock University where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Business
Administration as a Finance Major in 2007 and then his Master of Business Administration
in 2018. Jeff joined Edward Jones in 2018 and holds industry designations as a Certified
Financial Planner, Chartered Financial Consultant and Life Underwriter, and earned
a Client Service Excellence Award in 2021. He opened his Edward Jones office on Main
Street in downtown Butler and quickly became a pillar of the community, serving as
a Board Member and Past President of the Butler Downtown organization. He helped revamp
the Main Street holiday decorations and helped create events like ‘Foodie Fridays’
and “Sips in the City”.
Geibel also served in the military for 10 years as part of the PA Army National Guard and as a Sergeant with the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division in Iraq from 2004-2005, earning a Combat Infantry Badge. In addition, Jeff is an active member of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce, a graduate of the 2021 class of Leadership Butler County, served on the Advisory Council for Slippery Rock University’s SUCCEED organization, and serves as President of the Butler A.M. Rotary. Most recently, Geibel has been honored as the 2022 recipient of the Junior Distinguished Service Award for exemplary contribution to the community and by Slippery Rock University for the 10 Under 10 Awards in 2024 honoring outstanding SRU alumni. Born and raised on a farm in Butler County, Jeff is married to wife, Shirley, and has one son, Logan.
2023 Distinguished Alumni Honorees
A proud BC3 alum and graduate of Butler Senior High School, Ivory Dunlap earned her
Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education (Pre K-4) from BC3 in 1996. She then
transferred to what is now La Roche University to obtain her bachelor’s degree in
Elementary Education, and later completed her master’s degree in student affairs in
Higher Education from Slippery Rock University. Ivory served as an associate professor,
academic counselor and retention specialist in BC3’s Academic Center for Enrichment
in the Student Success Center from 2009 to 2021 and was a member of BC3’s Diversity,
Equity & Inclusion Council and BC3’s Green Zone, helping students transition from
military to civilian/college life, and was a founding member of BC3’s Pioneer Pantry.
Ms. Dunlap, a native of Butler County, comes from a family that has broken barriers. Her grandfather was Walter J. Dunlap, BC3’s first Black trustee, and her great grandfather, Clarence Dunlap, was co-founder of the first Black-owned business in Butler, Black and White Express Trucking. She currently serves as the director of the Office of Inclusive Excellence at Slippery Rock University, which includes the Women’s Center, Pride Center, Veterans’ Center, Multicultural Student Lounge, Multicultural Development and Student Transitions. Previously, Dunlap worked as a Systems Advocate counseling individuals in crisis at Victim Outreach Intervention Center, is a past member of Butler County PFLAG, and is a member of the Butler Collaborative for Families. Ivory is passionate about her life’s work with marginalized populations and strives to make a difference in people’s lives every day.
Dr. Shanea L. Clancy, a graduate of Seneca Valley High School, earned 64 credits
in general studies and an EMT Certification at BC3 from 2004 to 2007. She earned a
nursing diploma from West Penn Hospital, and a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing
from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, and earned her master’s degree and doctorate
in nursing from Duquesne University. Her skills and passion in serving the local community
are evident in her current position as the regional Suicide Prevention Coordinator
Team Lead with the Butler Veterans Health Administration.
Dr. Clancy has served on suicide prevention consortiums and task forces and with organizations that address addiction, taught ‘Veteran Suicide: Suicide Prevention is Everyone’s Business” noncredit courses at BC3 since 2020, and trains Veterans Health Administration employees nationwide about suicide prevention. She has served as a board member for Robin’s Home, the Community Action Agency, and the Southwestern PA Commission and was a member of the 2023 class of Leadership Butler County. Clancy is also president of Clancy Consulting Services and serves as the marketing coordinator for the Butler Collaborative for Families. Dr. Clancy is currently pursuing an Executive MBA in Healthcare from the Joseph M. Katz School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh, and is married to John Clancy and mother to three children, Graciela, Avelyn & Elias.
2022 Distinguished Alumni Honorees
Mr. Gregg Hartung completed his Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts from BC3
in 1980. He continued on to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Slippery
Rock University in 1981 and later on pursued a Master’s degree in Public Policy Management
& Public Relations from Carnegie Mellon University. He started serving as the Mayor
of Mars, PA, in 2014, and continues today in his third term through the year 2025.
As mayor, he was instrumental in establishing the Mars New Year Festival in conjunction
with NASA, Mars borough and Mars School District. The event provides STEAM education,
exhibits and experiences for all ages every two years in Mars, PA, coinciding with
new years on the planet, Mars.
Greg refers to himself as a director and producer, media consultant, church leader, mayor and professor. Hartung received his First Class FCC Broadcast/Engineering License in 1974 and was an on-air personality/engineer for a variety of PA radio stations throughout the years. He has been part of many film, tv, and radio organizations and has participated in a number of award-winning media projects over the years including awards from the Houston International Film Festival, New York International Radio Festival, as well as a Gabriel Award Winning Producer Best Syndicated Religious Radio and Best Radio Short Feature. Mr. Hartung has also served as an adjunct professor at Penn State Beaver Campus in Radio/Communications from 2015 to the present. John is married to his wife, Tina, and has three grown children, Matt, Michelle and Maria. He is also the proud grandfather to two grandchildren, Mabel and Ruby.
2021 Distinguished Alumni Honorees
Michelle Edinger graduated with her Associate in Applied Science in Marketing Management
from BC3 in 1984, followed by a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Slippery
Rock University and a Masters in Organizational Leadership from Geneva College. Michelle
served the BC3 Education Foundation for 16 years before retiring in 2020. She began
as the Foundation’s first Director of Alumni Programs and Campaigns and later became
Associate Director. She was part of a two-person development team that secured BC3’s
first $1-million gift during the “Pioneer Proud” Campaign. She established her own
scholarship, the Michelle Edinger ’84 Scholarship, as well as helped establish the
Jennie Jamieson ’83 Scholarship, to support non-traditional BC3 students. She is truly
the epitome of BC3’s slogan, “Pioneer Proud”!
Edinger was previously employed as the Information Specialist Supervisor with the Butler County Area Agency on Aging and more recently after her retirement from BC3, as the Director of Development with the Butler County Humane Society. She served with the Butler County Penn State Ext. 4H Advisory Board, the Butler County Area Agency on Aging, and the Slippery Rock University Communication Advisory Board as well as graduated from the Western PA Community College Leadership Institute. Ms. Edinger is also a member of the W. PA Association of Fundraising Professionals and holds a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) Certification. Michelle is married to husband, Dale Smith, and is the proud parent of two grown children and BC3 Alum, Erica Q. Jamieson ’14 and Martin A. Zanicky ’15.
2019 Distinguished Alumni Honorees
Linda Franiewski, a resident of West Sunbury, is a 1986 Butler County Community College
graduate. Since 2005, Linda has served as the Executive Director of the Ellen O’Brien
Gaiser Center in Butler, PA, where she is responsible for outreach, fundraising activities
and all Gaiser Center operations. She holds a BSBA in Finance from Slippery Rock University
and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, Katz Graduate School of Business. Linda
is also a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor in Pennsylvania.
Her volunteer and community service includes serving on the Board of Directors for the Butler County Family YMCA and the Butler County Criminal Justice Advisory Board, and participating as a member of the United Way of Butler County’s Women United. Her previous job positions included Assistant Vice President and Senior Financial Analyst for National City Bank, Pittsburgh, as well as Supervisor of Cash Management for Robertson-CECO Corp. in Pittsburgh. Linda has been married to her husband, Stan, for 40 years. They have two sons, Zachary and Josh.
John Reddick, a 1984 graduate of Butler County Community College, is a Registered
Architect and Project Manager at Stantec Architecture Engineering LLC (formerly Burt
Hill Architects). Employed with Stantec since 1987, John was named Rookie of the Year
in 1987, was awarded the Ralph Burt Award for Technical Excellence in 1994 and named
Associate in 1996. Reddick holds an Associate Degree in Applied Science from BC3 and
a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management from Geneva College. He was also
a member of the BC3 Baseball Team.
He is Vice President of the Butler Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation, is an active member of the Board of Managers for the Butler Family YMCA, serves as Treasurer of the Butler City- County Connoquenessing Creek Flood Control Authority and is a member of the American Institute of Architects. John and his wife, Cindy, have been married for 32 years and have two grown children, Patrick and Olivia, as well as one grandson, Beckett.
2018 Distinguished Alumni Honorees
Kim Geyer, a life-long Mars Area resident, is a 1984 Butler County Community College
graduate. Following graduation, Kim worked for 11 years as a flight attendant for
USAir, Inc. while working with her husband, Bob, on their successful family business,
Geyer Construction.
In 1993, Kim became a grassroots activist advocating for PA taxpayers. She formed Mars Research & Retrieval Services in 1997. Kim served on the Mars School Board for 12 years, as a trustee on the BC3 Board from 2011-2015, currently serves as secretary on the St. Barnabas Medical Center Board and is serving on the state board of the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges.
Kim currently serves as a Butler County Commissioner, serving as one of the first two women ever to work together as elected County Commissioners in Butler County’s government history. Kim has been married to Bob Geyer for 32 years, has two adult children, Haley and Seth, and two dogs, Winston and Pip.
Sandra Ihlenfeld is the newly appointed Executive Director of the Butler YMCA. She
began as a YMCA exercise instructor/personal trainer in 1996, and held other positions
throughout the years, most recently as Vice President of Organizational Advancement.
Sandra earned her Associate Degree in Physical Education from BC3, a B.S. in Exercise Science from Slippery Rock University, and a M.S. in Health & Physical Activity Research from the University of Pittsburgh. Ms. Ihlenfeld is the recipient of the 2018 Community Champion Award, the 2017 Slippery Rock University Alumni Award, and the YMCA William G. Schmiederer Memorial Award.
During her tenure with the Butler County Family YMCA, Sandra served the YMCA of the USA as an International Trainer. During this time she led certification courses for physical education graduate students in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Tokyo, and Jerusalem. Sandra is married to Tom Ihlenfeld and is a mother of three children: Kathleen Ihlenfeld, Elizabeth Maskal and Anna Smith.
2017 Distinguished Alumni Honorees
Lucille was a member of BC3's first class in 1966 and completed her associate degree
in 1973. She continued her education at Slippery Rock University, earning her bachelor's
and master's degrees in counseling.
Lucille joined the BC3 Education Foundation Board of Directors in 2010 and is an active member of the BC3 Alumni Council. She was instrumental in the creation of the BC3 Alumni Association and was honored in May 2017 for 20 years of service to the BC3 alumni program. She was chosen to be the alumni representative for BC3's 40th Anniversary events and spoke at the opening day celebration.
Lucille and her husband of 65 years, Dr. Louis Shapiro, established the Sara and Jack Green Scholarship in 2010 in memory of Lucille's parents and created the Shapiro Family Scholarship in 2014 in celebration of their family. Their family consists of three children, Beth, Robert, and Leslie and five grandchildren.
Ray Steffler walked onto BC3's campus to take some evening classes and never walked
away. He earned an associate degree in business management in 1986, becoming the first
person in his family to earn a college degree.
While attending BC3, Ray was invited to join the BC3 Board of Trustees. He joined in 1985 and became chairman in 1999. Ray's commitment to BC3 has earned him the longest tenure on the BC3 Board of Trustees and the longest term as chairman. Ray was also instrumental in the creation of the BC3 Alumni Association and was honored in May 2017 for his commitment to the BC3 Alumni Program.
After 45 years with the North Pittsburgh Telephone Company, Ray served as a Field Representative for 12 years with Senator MaryJo White. Ray continues as a Field Representative with State Senator Scott Hutchinson.
Ray and his wife, Kay, will celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary in the spring of 2018. They have two daughters, Karen and Michelle and one grandson, Costen.
2016 Distinguished Alumni Honorees
Rae was a graduate of Allegheny College. She began her career teaching high school math and science to polio patients at Warm Springs Foundation for Infantile Paralysis in Warm Springs, GA. After spending 15 years as a full time mother, Rae joined the faculty at BC3 teaching Math and English. She was named Chair of the Humanities Department in 1971. Rae created the Tuesday College Program designed to help women attend college one day a week and earn an Associate Degree. Ms. McGrath also wrote the lyrics of the college’s alma mater, “Hail to Thee, Oh Butler College.” She received the Outstanding Faculty Member award in 1983 and became the College Registrar in 1984. Rae retired in 1995, after 29 years of committed service to the students of BC3.
Kevin Boozel has a notable professional and volunteer history of service to the community.
After BC3, he received a degree in Elementary Education from IUP and earned a Master’s
of Science in Organizational Leadership at Geneva College. Kevin worked at Irene Stacy
Community Mental Health Center, then as Catholic Charities’ Executive Director and
served in other Butler County social services agencies in the areas of behavioral
health, senior care, housing/redevelopment, emergency services, homeless initiatives,
and education. His volunteer involvement and leadership include: Harrisville Volunteer
Fire Company firefighter and EMT; Youth Mentor at Connecting to Tomorrow; Rotary;
Butler Emergency Relief Initiative; Critical Incident Stress Management Team; Governor
appointed Emergency Management Coordinator; and Butler County Children’s Center. Kevin
resides in Slippery Rock with his wife of 23 years, Renee, and son, Colton, who is
leaving for the Army in June. His son, Zachory, a US Airman, and his wife, Marie,

Stephen J. Newcaster is the Senior Associate with Stantec (formerly Burt Hill), where
he began in 1996. He received his Associate Degrees in Architectural and Civil Technologies
from BC3. Steve has collaborated with the Architectural Program at BC3, guest teaching
architectural graphics and visualization. He is a former board member of Butler Downtown
and currently chairs the Design Committee. Steve is also a board member for the Butler
County Historical Society. In 2000, Steve received a Visualization Award from the
Bentley Software Company for his project designs.
Robert R. Heaton is a lifelong Butler County resident. At age 11 he began working
at the local Studebaker dealership and while in high school, he worked the “Victory
Shift” at the Bantam Car Company. Bob earned a degree in Mortuary Science and worked
for 45 years as a funeral director. Following his retirement, he devoted himself to
his avocation and in 1993 founded RHGL, Inc., along with his mentor, friend, and partner,
Glenn Logan. BC3 was a major influence to Heaton’s successful second career where
he completed courses in Real Estate Sales and Real Estate Management. At age 85, Bob
is still going strong and rarely misses going into the office.
Ed is a lifelong resident of Butler County and a second generation Real Estate Broker.
Ed graduated in 1958 from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Real Estate.
In 1966, during BC3’s first semester, Ed began teaching noncredit Real Estate courses.
He also taught at Penn State University, Slippery Rock University, and Duquesne University.
In 1971, Ed opened Ed Shields Realtor on Route 8 South. Ed was honored as Realtor
of the Year, in three different decades, by the Butler County Association of Realtors.
He received Realtor Emeritus Designation by the National Association of Realtors for
over 40 years of distinguished service. Ed serves on the Butler Township Planning

Kathleen M. Brown graduated from BC3 in 1983 as a Licensed Practical Nurse. While working as a Practical Nurse she continued her education at UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing, graduating in 1989. At that time she began her RN career at UPMC Shadyside as a staff nurse. Kathleen continued on to Carlow University, graduating in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. In January 1995, Kathleen became a Primary Care Case Manager, and then became the Director of the Case Management Department in January, 2000 and the Unit Director of two Interventional/Medical Cardiology units in June, 2000. Kathleen earned a Master's of Science in Health Services Administration in 2002 from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois and in February 2003, was promoted to Director of Inpatient Cardiology at UPMC Shadyside. In January 2008, Kathleen began her present position as a Director at the Donald D. Wolff, Jr. Center for Quality Improvement and Innovation of UPMC. She earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2008 from Chatham University.
In November, 2008 Kathleen received the Gartner Award – Healthcare IT Summit's Innovation Award in the category of Best Case Study Presentation. She has been a "Hope for Tomorrow - Race for the Cure" team organizer since 1998 and volunteered with Pennsylvania State Police Troop D Camp Cadet as a camp nurse and board member from 1985 through 2005. Kathleen lives in Cheswick and is the youngest of six. Her parents are Robert and Catherine Brown of Chicora.
